Vincent is a new dance theatre work exploring an abstract dialogue of the tortured life and man behind the brush of artist Vincent Van Gogh. During our 2016 premiering season, Vincent was described amongst other rave reviews as “immersive theatre of the first order”. Vincent utilizes a choreographic structure that allows the audience to experience a multi-disciplinary performance of dance, original music, spoken word and visual design.
The work dives artistically into Vincent’s inner psyche and his grappling of the world around him through metaphor and portrayal. All of the dialogue used in the work is taken from the more than 900 letters that Vincent wrote to his brother. Therefore, similar to the artists radically idiosyncratic, emotionally evocative style Vincent is an extraordinarily moving work that focuses on Vincent and his relationship with his close and long suffering brother Theo. Contextually, the dramatic and rhythmic work (for a short time) abolishes the order of the normal course of life and imparts new insights to the audience. Vincent aims to direct the audience to experience a tangible representation of mental illness, depression and genius while also exploring the social implications of mental illness within family. The performance allows a platform for discussion and self-expression in a non-confronting environment, allowing a wider audience engagement and opportunity for exploration.
